Part: 04 Configuring Zerto Virtual Replication

Now we have installed Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM) in previous post we are now ready to install Zerto Virtual Replication Appliances (VRA)s. Installing VRA’s happens via DR UI interface. In this post I will be using browser based UI. I feel quite comfortable with browser than embedded plug-in. However one advantage you get with embedded plug-in that you don’t have to put password for authentication. It uses same authentication as vCenter.

Now point the browser to https://nameofZVMmachine:9669.

At this moment you need license key from Zerto ,without which you cannot proceed.

In below figure: 01 I’m not entering license key but pairing it with the remote site. My zvmcustom is my remote site. I know I need take lesson on naming conventionSmile with tongue out. On remote site I have already installed license. So pairing is helping me to do two tasks at a time i.e Pairing and licensing the remote site. Wonderful approach !!!Thumbs up

After pairing ZVM can manage up to 5000 VMs. ZVM in this case be either protected or recovery site.

Installing Virtual Replication Appliance (VRA)

VRA must be deployed on each and every ESXi host of which VMs you wish to protect and recovery. It is strongly recommended to install VRAs on all ESXi host in a cluster. This protects VMs when they are vMotioned to another host in the host in the cluster

VRA can protect maximum of 500 Volumes.

VRA requirements

  1. Disk Space: 12.5 GB
  2. RAM: 1 GB (reserved). It is minimum requirement
  3. SSH Port:22 is enabled on ESXi host
  4. Https Port: 443 is enabled on ESXi host
  5. Static IP

After you select host to install as seen in Figure: 04, below screen appears. Fill in all details as shown below. Zerto recommends static IP for VRA

If you happen to change ESXi root password you must update VRA with new password in Zerto interface as well (refer figure: 06). The password is used by the Zerto Virtual Manager when deploying and upgrading the VRA on this host. Also, root access is required in case the Zerto host component is down and needs an automatic restart. The Zerto Virtual Manager checks the password is valid once a day. If the password was changed, an alert is triggered, requesting the user enter the new password.

By default VRA is provided 100% reservation of memory configured. I just configured 1 GB RAM. So 100% of the RAM is reserved.

RAM size is decides the maximum buffer size available for holding data to be replicated. Data could be sent by VMs from Prod site or could be incoming into DR’s VRAs

VRAs at protected site can use 90% of buffer to sent I/O over the network and VRAs at recovery site can use 75% of the buffer.
